Step by Step

In this activity you will have the opportunity to access the Archaeological Museum of Crete without queuing or waiting. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is considered one of the most important museums in Europe and you will discover a collection covering a period of more than 5,000 years .

The museum's collection is notable for its abundance of treasures from the Minoan era, one of the oldest civilisations of Classical Greece, which had its political and administrative centre on the island of Crete.

Among the exhibits are statues, sarcophagi, frescoes, pottery, jewellery and weapons, many of which have been found at the important archaeological sites of Knossos, Festos, Malia and Zakros, among other places on the island.

Among the highlights of the museum are the famous Disk of Festos, a unique piece of pottery containing a hithertoundeciphered hieroglyphic inscription, as well as a large collection of terracotta figurines from the Minoan period.

The museum is housed in a modern building that opened in 1997 and has ample space for displaying the collections. The museum also offers guided tours in several languages and has an auditorium and alibrary specialising in archaeology and ancient art.

If you have the opportunity to visit Crete, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is a must for those interested in the history and archaeology of the island.

Fabulously interesting, the antiques looked no more than 50 or 100 years old.
