National Football League
The National Football League (NFL) consists of 32 franchises from the United States divided into two conferences, the AFC and NFC, each with four divisions.
History of the NFL
Founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, it changed to its current name in 1922. The rivalry with the American Football League ended with the 1970 merger, which established the two-conference format. Notable reforms include the complete liberalization of the forward pass in 1933, the two-point conversion in 1994, and the new kickoff and overtime protocol debuting in 2025.
Notable NFL Players
Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Lawrence Taylor, Jerry Rice, Tom Brady, Aaron Donald, and Patrick Mahomes have each defined different eras within the league.
