The Los Angeles Museum of Natural History was founded in 1913 and is the largest museum in the western United States. It has three floors of permanent exhibits, including animal habitats, dinosaurs and pre-Columbian cultures in the Americas. Its collections include gigantic skeletons of marine mammals, dinosaurs and mammoths, but also rubies, sapphires, emeralds, diamonds and many other precious stones.

During the spring months, a butterfly collection is on display in the museum's outdoor pavilion , which is replaced in the autumn by a spider collection. Diverse and comprehensive, it is considered one of the most enjoyable and interesting museums in the United States.
