Step by Step

Brixton is not just a neighbourhood, it's a symbol of London's cultural resistance and creativity. On this free guided tour, you'll get to know its lively streets, its history marked by migration and social movements, and its vibrant present as an artistic and gastronomic epicentre.

You'll start your tour at Brixton tube station, from where you'll visit iconic spots such as Electric Avenue, the UK's first electrically lit street, and the Nuclear Dawn mural, a street artwork with a powerful visual message.

You'll continue on to Brixton Village and Pop Brixton, markets with a community soul, where you'll discover world flavours and unique crafts. You'll also pass through Windrush Square, a place of remembrance dedicated to the Caribbean community that arrived in the UK in the post-war period, a key part of the neighbourhood's identity.

Other highlights of the tour include Brixton House, an important contemporary cultural space, St. Matthew's Church and the legendary Electric Brixton, a concert hall that has been the epicentre of genres such as dub, reggae and punk. Without a doubt, one of the most moving moments will be in front of the memorial to David Bowie, who was born in this neighbourhood.

This walking tour offers an up-close, human and local look at the neighbourhood, with stories you won't find in traditional guidebooks.
