Ayutthaya Day Trip from Bangkok

This tour starts in Bangkok and goes to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Siam before the Burmese invasion. Here you will find the Historical Park, an island bordered by a river path that encloses royal palaces and places of worship. The organised tour covers most of the day's needs: a local guide, lunch and entrance fees to the attractions.

Ayutthaya is located about 80 kilometres north of Bangkok and is easily accessible with the air-conditioned vehicle provided for the tour. The tour normally lasts between 7 and 8 hours and touches on the following monuments:

• Wat Lokayasutharam - Its main attraction is the gigantic statue of reclining Buddha: 42 metres long by 8 metres high.
• Wat Phra Si Sanphet - The private chapel of the royal family. Not surprisingly, the remains of three important monarchs lie here. It is recognisable by its three stupas, the Buddhist monument par excellence.
• Wat Mahathat - A grandiose temple built in the 14th century. It is best known for the Buddha's head embedded in a banyan tree. It is located in the northern part of the park.
• Wat Chaiwatthanaram - Situated on the banks of the river, it was built in the 17th century by King Prasat Thong to celebrate his coronation. It is undoubtedly one of the best preserved historical sites in the world.

The tour is designed for small groups and takes place at any time of the year. Please note that Thailand has a tropical climate. If you visit during the rainy season - between April and October - I recommend that you bring a poncho. In the warmer months - April and May - it is advisable to bring sunscreen and a hat.
