Step by Step
This hiking tour will take you to the Parque Rural de Anaga, a mountain range of extraordinary beauty. It is located in the northern part of Tenerife, not far from Santa Cruz and San Cristobal de la Laguna. The hike takes about 3 hours and includes a guide who knows the trails as well as the most attractive spots.
If you are staying in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you can use the pick-up service. Otherwise, you will have to get to the meeting point by your own means. Normally, the first stop is the Cruz del Carmen Visitor Centre, which has all the information on flora, fauna and the routes within the park.
The Parque Rural de Anaga is one of the most biodiverse places on the island. Here the laurel forest thrives, a tropical forest with strawberry trees, Canary Island willows and lime trees at the foot of which heather, ferns and other endemic species thrive. Millions of years ago, this ecosystem covered much of North Africa and southern Europe, while today it survives only in the Canary Islands, the Azores and Cape Verde.
Declared a Biosphere Reserve, it is the wildest area of Tenerife and is criss-crossed by numerous trails once used by the locals. In addition to the aforementioned laurel forest, the Anaga Rural Park is worth a visit to stroll in the shade of the luxuriant vegetation, admire the views from the viewpoints and the flowers that grow luxuriantly thanks to the humidity of this ecosystem.
Humidity is a constant factor and it is not uncommon to see fog banks and sudden showers. To avoid surprises, I recommend dressing in layers and wearing appropriate footwear. Remember to pack sunscreen, a hat and a rain jacket.
