Step by Step

In this activity you will have the opportunity to visit the Real Alcázar of Seville, without queuing or waiting to get inside. Throughout the visit, you will be able to tour this palace complex, whose construction dates back to the 10th century, in the time of the Cordovan Caliph Abderramán III.

Due to its long history, the Alcázar of Seville has architectural elements from different artistic periods, including Islamic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque. Together with the Archive of the Indies and Seville Cathedral, the Alcázar was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. With some 2 million visitors every year, it is one of the most visited tourist monuments in Spain.

The building is made up of three different palaces, which are:

  • The original enclosure: Erected by Abderramán III, who attached the enclosure to an ancient Roman wall. Inside, rooms such as the Lion's Gate, the main access to the enclosure, or the Hall of Justice, where the courts that conducted trials were held, stand out.
  • Gothic Palace: This was built during the 13th century, in the time of Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile. Thechapel of San Clemente, dating from 1271, the Great Hall, also known as the Hall of Celebrations, and the Hall of Tapestries, decorated with six tapestries commemorating the conquest of Tunisia by Charles I in 1535, stand out.
  • Mudejar Palace or Palace of Pedro I: Erected by order of King Pedro I between 1356 and 1366 to serve as his private building. It was later transformed during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs and during the Habsburg dynasty. Highlights of the interior include the Palace of the Dolls, with its marble columns and horseshoe arches, and the Ambassadors' Hall, which, being the most sumptuous part of the palace, is where foreign diplomats were received.

Because the palace still serves as the residence of the Spanish royal family when they visit Seville, the Alcázar is considered to be the oldest royal palace in use in Europe . Its good state of preservation has also made it the setting for important films and series, such as Lawrence of Arabia, Ridley Scott's 1492 and Game of Thrones .
