  • The Municipal Gardens: also known as the garden of Dona Amélia in honour of the former queen of Portugal. Located in the centre of Funchal. It houses native flora from the city and from different parts of the world. It has 8,300 m², a lake and a stream with birds and fish.
  • The Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre: a place with a surprising architectural beauty in neoclassical style. It is one of the main centres of art and culture in the city, where music, theatre, exhibitions and festivals are held.
  • Mercado dos Lavradores: built in the 1930s with Art Deco and Modernist influences. It is the favourite place for locals and visitors to buy fruits, vegetables, fish, and fresh flowers.
  • Zona Vieja (Old Town): see what the city's nightlife is like and the area that is home to art and entertainment. Stroll through its beautiful narrow cobblestone streets and renowned restaurants and bars.
  • The Church of St. John the Evangelist of the College of Funchal: built in the 17th century, it houses artefacts of baroque and mannerist art. It is one of the most visited monuments on the island.
  • Jesuit College of Funchal: currently part of the University of Madeira, it has a striking Portuguese baroque architecture and houses various art exhibitions.

    The capital of Madeira is surprising, a city that enjoys an architectural mix of the modern and the ancient. Although the tour is not very long, you will learn a lot about the history of the place.
