Step by Step

Art Nouveau, known in Italy as Stile Liberty or floreale, arrived in Turin in 1902, the year of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art. The bourgeoisie was fascinated and commissioned the construction of splendid buildings that have survived the passage of time. A local guide will accompany you through the city centre, showing you the most fascinating examples. The tour lasts about 2 hours and concludes with a coffee in an art nouveau bar.

Turin is the capital of Art Deco. The architects were influenced by French and Belgian masters and created buildings of great elegance:

  • Casa Fenoglio-Lafleur: designed as a true manifesto of the Liberty style, it is notable for its corner tower adorned with large coloured windows and wrought-iron balconies.
  • Villino Raby: this elegant building bears the signature of Pietro Fenoglio, the same architect who designed the Casa Lafleur and many other buildings in the city. Both inside and outside, the beautifully decorated wrought iron gates and railings stand out.
  • Casa dei Draghi: a magnificent five-storey building that blends neo-Gothic and Art Deco. It is located in the Cit district of Turin - a stone's throw from the famous Piazza Statuto - and is also known as the House of Victory.
  • Chiesa di Gesù Nazareno: designed by the architect Giuseppe Gallo, it has three naves, a Latin cross plan and clear Art Nouveau influences.

The itinerary also includes a stop at a café, also in Art Deco style, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.

Overall I liked it very much. I learned about art nouveau and the café we visited was more or less an icon of this architectural movement. It is ideal for people who like to know the ins and outs of the places they visit.
