On this tour you will have the opportunity to visit Pompeii, famous for having been destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79. The ruins of the city were discovered in the 18th century and are currently one of the best preserved archaeological heritages on the planet .
Pompeii was sunk under the ashes of Vesuvius, which allowed the ruins to be preserved and now allows us to discover the details of what life was like in the city at the time it was destroyed. You will be able to visit houses, shops, statues, signs and public buildings, all of which are perfectly preserved. This will give you an idea of what life was like in Roman times .
Some of the most important archaeological remains of the city are the following:
- Forum of Pompeii: This was the civic centre and the heart of Pompeii's commercial life. It was accessed through a large bronze gate and no carriages were allowed inside.
- Temple of Jupiter: The temple was built in the 2nd century BC in honour of the Roman god Jupiter, equivalent to the Greek god Zeus. It was severely damaged by the earthquake of 62 AD and was being restored at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius.
- Basilica: The Basilica of Pompeii was the seat of the administration of justice and, together with the Forum, was the most important building in the city.
- Temple of Apollo: This temple was located in an area enclosed by 48 columns and worshipped the Greek deity Apollo, whose cult had been widespread in the region for centuries. Among other things, Apollo was known as the god of the sun.
