Step by Step

This activity allows you to get in touch with the true Balinese culinary tradition. An air-conditioned vehicle will pick you up from your hotel in Ubud (if you are staying elsewhere, you will have to pay extra) and take you to a private house, where you will meet a local family. They will show you their vegetable garden and farm animals, which they use to self-produce some ingredients.

The total duration of the activity is approximately 3 hours and you can choose to do it during lunch or dinner. This family will teach you how to prepare typical dishes which you can taste after making them (accompanied by some local spirits). The list below lists the most famous ones:

  • Pepes Ikan - Meat or fish wrapped in banana leaves and cooked on a griddle. To prevent the contents from spilling out, the leaf is "sealed" with small bamboo sticks at the ends.
  • Bakso - A classic Balinese street food. It is a dumpling soup made with minced chicken (or beef, fish, pork or a mixture of meats) and tapioca flour.
  • Gado Gado - A mixture of boiled vegetables, flavoured with a delicious peanut-based sauce. It is a particularly tasty vegetarian dish
  • Satay - Skewered chicken or fish, flavoured with a sweet and sour sauce. Traditionally, the sticks are made from lemongrass.
  • Ikan Bakar - A whole grouper marinated in onion, garlic, coriander, tamarind and other spices. It is usually served with spicy sambal sauce and white rice.

This list is just an example, as Balinese cuisine includes dishes such as Perkedel (corn fritters), Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Pisang Goreng (fried plantain) and other delicacies.
