Step by Step

This tour departs from Avignon for Châteauneuf du Pape, a charming village known mainly for its wine tradition. The tour lasts approximately 4 hours and includes both an expert guide and wine tasting in two traditional cellars. Transport - including pick-up and return to the hotel - is by air-conditioned minivan.

The Popes resided in Châteauneuf du Pape during the years of the so-called Avignon Captivity. This term identifies the period between 1309 and 1376, when six popes left Rome to settle in the south of France. On a hill overlooking the old town are the ruins of the castle built at the behest of Pope John XXII. The tour includes a stop at the foot of the castle, where you can admire a splendid view of the Rhône valley.

The tour continues with a wine tasting of two local varieties. Here, grapes grow luxuriantly thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate, the Mistral wind and, above all, the richness of the soil. The latter is characterised by red clay and small rocks called galets roules, which absorb heat during the day and release it gradually. It is no coincidence that the first French AOC wine was harvested in Châteauneuf du Pape.

The most used varieties are Garnache (the most important), Bourboulenc, Terret noir and Vaccarèse. Most of the production is of red wines, although there are also white and rosé wines. As this is an activity for small groups, you will be able to make the most of the day and not miss any of the explanations.
