Step by Step

You will explore Josefov, the old Jewish quarter of Prague, in depth on a walking tour. The Jewish community has had an extensive presence in the Czech Republic and on this tour you will learn about its history and heritage from a professional local guide.

This experience will last approximately two and a half hours, enough time to visit some important places of Jewish influence such as the old Jewish cemetery or the different synagogues spread throughout the district.

The Jewish community of Josefov was one of the largest in Europe, with around 180,000 citizens, and it is estimated that the first Jews arrived in the 10th century. It was one of Prague's most suffering areas for the Jewish people where persecutions, expulsions and executions were the order of the day.

Although much of the quarter was demolished, many remains and Jewish heritage buildings are still preserved. This experience includes a visit to the following emblematic sites:

  • Spanish Synagogue: built in 1868, it is the newest synagogue in Prague and owes its name to the Mudejar artistic decoration of its interior.
  • Pinkas Synagogue: its most striking feature is the walls, where the names of 80,000 Czech Jewish victims are hand-painted.
  • Klausen Synagogue: the largest synagogue in Prague's Jewish quarter and the only example of an early Baroque synagogue in the ghetto.
  • Maisel Synagogue: houses a museum and is in Renaissance and neo-Gothic style.
  • Jewish Cemetery: it is estimated that there are approximately 12,000 apparently visible graves, in which more than 100,000 Jews are buried.

It was great to be able to enter all the synagogues directly and not waste time queuing at the ticket office.
