Step by Step

Learn one of the most tragic stories of the Second World War on this excursion to the Mauthausen concentration camp from Vienna. This activity lasts around nine hours and you'll have an audio guide in several languages at your disposal to show you the different areas you'll be able to access in the camp. You won't have to worry about transport, as a bus will make the round trip from Vienna, a journey of about 150 kilometres by road.

During this tour you will be confronted with a reality that was experienced relatively recently. Mauthausen was a Nazi concentration camp established in 1938, shortly after the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. The camp was intended to hold prisoners from Austria, but later became one of the most brutal concentration camps, holding prisoners from all over Europe.

An estimated 200,000 people were imprisoned in Mauthausen and at least 90,000 of them died as a result of the camp's harsh conditions. They were forced to perform forced labour and many were subjected to medical experiments and forced sterilisation.

On this tour, organised for groups of around 25 people, you will have access to both the Mauthausen Museum and Memorial, places designed to raise awareness of the atrocities that were committed there and the lives of the prisoners who were held there.

You will also be able to see the Wiener-Graben quarry and the Stairs of Death, two of the most outstanding places in the camp. On the one hand, the prisoners were forced to work in this quarry, crushing granite and carrying heavy rocks. On the other hand, the so-called Stairs of Death were steep stairs that connected the camp with the quarry. Many had accidents on these stairs, were tortured by the guards or were thrown down.

The tour was a moving and educational experience, but I think it would be useful to include more historical details during the tour.
